If you’re experiencing mild symptoms that feel like a typical common cold, or you don’t even have symptoms at all, it’s probably hard to understand the importance of staying home. We understand and want to stress that this is not about YOU.

It is about your grandparents.

It is about your aunt with high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes.

It is about the volunteers in the nursery at your place of worship.

It is about the hourly workers still making your coffee.

It is about the healthcare workers who continue to put themselves in harm’s way.

Do I Need to Be Tested?

I need test, you need a test, we all need a test! Or do we? If you are like approximately 80% of the population, a test confirming we are positive for COVID-19 won’t change the doctor’s advice.

So why is so much attention being given to screening and testing for COVID-19? Because unlike the common cold or flu, it is spreading so rapidly that it has the potential to overwhelm our already stretched healthcare system.

Our health care providers are already stretched, and when the rest of us panic, we make it harder for them to take care of those who are extremely sick. If you wouldn’t go to the doctor for these symptoms under normal circumstances, please don’t go now.

Now that COVID-19 is in our community, it’s human nature to want to have as much information as we possibly can, as fast as we can. I don’t know about you, but sometimes this age of instant information overwhelms me. All I really want to know is what I can do to keep myself, and the people I love, healthy.

At this point, we need to focus on slowing the spread. Here are a few basic rules to help you do your part:

Can you pass me a tissue? What used to be a normal request this time of year is now one that can induce anxiety and fear. We want you to know we understand why you might feel that way, and we appreciate steps you may be taking to help prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19. But we also think it’s important to stick to the facts – and we at the Oklahoma State Department of Health are focused on making sure you have them.
